For brunch try the Vermont which is a smoked pork and cheddar link accompanied with an incredibly crunchy and rich hash brown.

The pea salad with parmesan is wonderfully fresh and tasty. Try either the Artic Char with romanesco cauliflower or the Catham Cod with asapargus and a citrus emulsion.

Casa Mono
Gramercy
Start the meal off with the ensalada mono, a fresh mix of frisee and crunchy marcona almonds topped off with generous slices of delicious manchego cheese. The quail with cranberries and the duck breast with asapargus are both nice dishes.

You must try the fried cauliflower that is crispy and in a flavorful fish sauce. If you are feeling adventurous the wild burgundy snails, with pork sausage, garlic and tarragon is delicious and bursting with flavors.

What to Eat Now: May

There are great restaurants and great dishes. Sometimes they don’t always go hand in hand and a little suggestion is needed! So for the monthly roundup these are great dishes to try if you find yourself at one of these restaurants or even in the area!

Boqueria
Flatiron
Try the creamy croquettes of mushroom and chicken ($12) and the mahon cheese and house made chorizo fondue ($12). Then finish the  meal off with the Churros con Chocolate $7

Bill’s Bar and Burger
Meatpacking District
Definitely choose the Fat Cat burger, a juicy burger with carmelized onions and American cheese served on an English muffin. Skip the so-so fries and instead indulge in a heavenly Oreo milkshake!

Sakagura
Midtown East
Emerge from a midtown office building lobby into an authentic Japanese hideaway. Try the Oyako Don, organic chicken & eggs, and onion served atop a rice which includes a bowl of hot or cold soba. Or order the tempura soba with comes with a heaping plate of crispy tempura vegetables and shrimp and a bowl of  hot or cold soba. A lunch steal at only $11.

Accademia di Vino
Upper East Side
Some things on the menu are simply fair but if you do find yourself at this upper east side vinoteca you must have the Robiola, Black Truffle Pate, Pecorino Tartufato ($19). It’s paper thin and decadent!

Flex Mussels
Upper East Side
Yes, yes the mussels are wonderful, but you simply won’t believe how good a seafood place does doughnuts. You must try the salted caramel doughnuts, they are simply amazing!

Commerce
West Village
First of all the bread basket here is enough of a reason to keep coming back! It has over 5 different types including homemade soft pretzels, olive bread, cheese foccacia, etc.  Also try the whole Roasted Chicken for two w/ foie gras bread stuffing & potato mousseline ($29pp). It’s the perfect roast chicken infused with herbs and perfectly cooked.  The Fettuccini w/ one hour tomato sauce & house made ricotta ($24) is also simple and delicious.

 L’artusi
West Village
Absoultely loved the Farfelle with duck ragu ($19). It’s hearty and bursting with flavor. The grilled quail, sweet potatoes, pancetta andsage is also a great bet ($15).

 Joseph Leonard
West Village
I just simply adore this place. They seem to do everything right. Start with the Soggy toast oyster mushrooms, pan sauces and a poached egg. Then try the Crispy braised pork hock with arugula.

Maialino

Maialino PastaHail to the restaurateur Danny Meyer!  The man simply does no wrong.  In his latest venture, Maialino, he brings a roman trattoria into the Gramcery Park Hotel.  This is Meyer’s  first Italian restaurant in his substantial NYC  empire (Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe to name just a few).

A well crafted menu and  friendly service the instant you walk in help create a warm atmosphere at Maialino.  The place is quaint with wood paneling and blue and white checkered table clothes. However, for me the decor falls slightly short especially when juxtaposed against Meyer’s atmospheric gems like Eleven Madison Park  and The Modern.  I must admit I’m partial to his more dramatic spaces but nonetheless Maialino was a delightful time and I’m anxious to return!

The front bar room has a lengthy bar and several tables where one can enjoy a condensed bar menu. The back dining room consists of a full roman trattoria style menu.  Start the meal off right with some delicious cured meats and cheese from the extensive selection.  Several standout dishes include the  Raviolo al Uovo, the Malfatti with pork ragu, and the Bisteck.  The delicate raviolo when cut into erupts with spinach, ricotta, and egg  yolk; its light and bursting with flavor. The Mulfatti consists of fresh pasta mixed with succulent shredded pork, finished off with crisp bitter arugula which rounds out the dish nicely.  The bisteck is grilled to a perfect crunchy exterior texture and sits upon sautéed heirloom beans and escarole.

At Maialino you’ll find friendly and knowledgeable staff  and delicious food just as you would expect from a Meyer establishment. The place is warm, albeit slightly loud, and a truly pleasurable dining experience.  FYI they are now open for both breakfast and lunch.

Recommendation:  Can’t wait to return!

François Chocolate Bar

What:  Chocolate bar with a variety of hot chocolate flavors, verrines (layered desserts in small glasses), macaroons and signature gifts along with a coffee bar and small table seating area.

Where: 714 Madison Ave between 63rd & 64th Streets, 4th Floor

Best of: Chocolate Croissants!

croissantsSometimes it’s difficult to order food online, can you trust the quality, etc? Well look no further for gifts or for yourself than Williams Sonoma’s frozen croissants.  I need to thank my dear friends the Plantings for introducing me to these fantastic croissants last holiday season.  I was absolutely thrilled when just this past weekend I received a box as a Christmas gift from two very special people. Each box contains 15 croissants either chocolate (the way to go), plain or an assortment. They can be kept frozen up to 3 months (however how you can not eat them all in a matter of weeks is beyond me!) To prepare them all you need to do is let them rise on a cookie sheet overnight and in the morning bake them for about 15 mins and voila you have fresh, warm straight out of the oven croissants!  What’s great about these croissants is you can take out as many or as few as you want each time so they are perfect for entertaining guests as well as just having one for youself on a Saturday morning! The flaky buttery goodness just simply melts in your mouth and the chocolate is so perfectly rich and sweet. They are pretty close to perfection and I simply adore them!

Thank you Marsha and Scott!

MIAMI

Miami 2Scarpetta

Chef Scott Conant of NYC’s Scarpetta has opened a Miami outpost of his Italian restaurant in the recently renovated Fontainebleau Miami Beach. I have not yet dined at Scarpetta NYC however upon eating at his Miami restaurant I instantly called to make a reservation at the New York one. Scarpetta Miami was fabulous from the décor down to the food. A striking color palette of blues creates a very tranquil setting. The lounge area has gorgeous blue mosaic countertops and soft lighting.  Friendly and knowledgeable service makes you feel comfortable. Not one dish disappointed, even the bread basket was note worthy. Look out for a NYC Scarpetta review to come!

Mermaid Oyster Bar

Mermaid Oyster Bar 4Mermaid Oyster bar is the newest venture from the guys who brought you the Mermaid Inn in the East Village and the Upper West Side. The new oyster bar occupies the old Smith’s space on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village. The re-design is quite nice with great lighting, clean lines, and a welcoming feel. Definitely take into consideration that this is a restaurant for seafood lovers, with the exception of one NY strip everything on the menu is from the sea. The menu has 16 types of oysters, half west coast half east coast and an assortment of fish and seafood classics. At the end of your meal they serve you a complimentary tiny mug of chocolate pudding! Be sure to indulge in the lobster sandwich which was full of flavor and deliciously rich served on a toasty and buttery roll. It was accompanied by “old bay fries” according to the menu however I neither saw nor tasted any old bay on them. Read More »

Joseph Leonard

www.josephleonard.com

Already a huge fan of The Little Owl and Market Table, I went into Joseph Leonard with a predisposition to like it. I was pleased to say my expectations were met. Joseph Leonard is the new venture from Gabriel Stulman (he previously was manager/partner of the above mentioned restaurants). I do however have to give the décor upper hand to The Little Owl and Market Table. Their designs are more thought-out with beautiful subtle touches including their sprawling windows that look out onto the streets. That being said I do love that whole tiny restaurant eclectic mismatch décor that is Joseph Leonard—it’s not quite kitschy (I hate that) instead it feels homey just like the food.
